E-Bike Range: How Far It Really Goes, and the Watt-Hour Math Behind the Claim
By Volt Ranger editorial · Published · Updated
Range is one division: battery watt-hours ÷ watt-hours per mile. Watt-hours is volts × amp-hours, so a 48V 20Ah pack holds 960 Wh. Consumption is the variable that manufacturers quietly choose for you. Ride1Up's range explainer puts real-world draw at roughly 15–20 Wh per mile on a 250W bike, 20–25 Wh on a 500W bike, and around 30 Wh or more on a 750W-plus bike. Every headline range figure in this catalog works out to about 12–13 Wh per mile — the low-assist, flat-ground, light-rider end. Divide the advertised number by two if you use a throttle, carry cargo, or ride hills.
Watt-hours in the packs actually sold here
| 24V × 10.4Ah (Mooncool CD1 youth trike) | 250 Wh |
| 48V × 13.6Ah (Mooncool POP folding bike) | 653 Wh |
| 48V × 14.5Ah (Mooncool FT1 fat-tire trike) | 696 Wh |
| 48V × 15Ah (Mooncool TK2 trike; Kingbull Literider 2.0, listed as 720Wh) | 720 Wh |
| 48V × 17.5Ah (Kingbull external pack, listed as 840WH) | 840 Wh |
| 48V × 20Ah (Mooncool TK Pro and TK2 PRO; Kingbull Verve and Trekker, listed as 960Wh Samsung) | 960 Wh |
Amp-hours alone tell you nothing across different voltages. A 24V 10.4Ah pack and a 48V 10.4Ah pack differ by a factor of two in stored energy. Always convert to watt-hours before comparing.

What the claimed ranges imply about assist level
| FT1 trike | 696 Wh, listed 35–60 mi | 12–20 Wh/mi implied |
| TK2 trike | 720 Wh, listed 35–60 mi | 12–21 Wh/mi implied |
| TK Pro / TK2 PRO trike | 960 Wh, listed 45–75 mi | 13–21 Wh/mi implied |
| Verve and Trekker | 960 Wh, listed up to 80 mi | 12 Wh/mi implied |
| Discover 2.0 / Discover ST 2.0 | 15Ah Samsung pack listed "up to 60 miles" | 12 Wh/mi implied |
Note the pattern: the top of every claimed range lands at 12–13 Wh per mile, and the bottom lands near 20–21. Read the low end of a manufacturer's range band as the realistic figure and the high end as a laboratory-flat, lowest-assist result.

The honest numbers for a 960 Wh bike
| 20 Wh/mi (low assist, flat, light rider, pedalling hard) | 48 miles |
| 25 Wh/mi (mixed assist, rolling terrain) | 38 miles |
| 30 Wh/mi (high assist or heavy throttle on a 750W bike) | 32 miles |
The same three bands on a 696 Wh pack give 35, 28 and 23 miles. Plan a route on the middle number and you will rarely be surprised; plan on the box number and you will eventually pedal an unpowered bike home.

What actually drains the battery
Assist level and throttle dominate everything else. Throttle-only riding is the single most expensive thing you can do with a battery, because it removes your legs from the energy budget entirely. Hills come next: climbing is pure work against gravity and no motor tuning changes that arithmetic. Rider and cargo weight barely matters on flat ground and matters enormously on a climb — the Voyager 2.0 listing quotes a 450 lb payload capacity, and a bike loaded to that figure is doing a different job than a solo commuter. Fat tires at low pressure add rolling resistance; the Kingbull Ranger and Hunter 2.0S listings both recommend 25–28 PSI, and running well under that costs range. Cold reduces usable capacity while the pack is cold, and headwind rises steeply with speed, which is why 22 mph into a breeze empties a battery so much faster than 14 mph does.

A manufacturer figure that is internally consistent
One Mooncool battery listing is unusually specific and worth using as a sanity check: it states that a 36V/10.4Ah pack "supports a range of 25-30 miles per full charge" and a 36V/14.5Ah pack "supports a range of 35-40 miles." Convert those: 374 Wh over 25–30 miles is 12.5–15 Wh per mile, and 522 Wh over 35–40 miles is 13–15 Wh per mile. The two claims agree with each other, which is a good sign — but they still sit in the gentle-assist band. When two of a brand's numbers agree, you have learned the assist level they test at, not the range you will get.

Buying for range instead of hoping for it
Decide the longest ride you actually do, double it for the round trip, then divide by 20 Wh per mile if you pedal seriously or 30 Wh per mile if you like the throttle. That gives you a watt-hour target. A 15-mile each-way commute at 25 Wh/mi needs 750 Wh, which points at a 48V 15Ah pack or larger. If your target lands awkwardly between models, buying a second battery is usually cheaper and always more flexible than buying a bigger bike: spare packs in this catalog run $189.99 to $649 depending on model and cell type, and they let you split the charge cycles across two packs, which extends the life of both.

FAQ
How do I convert amp-hours to watt-hours?
Multiply nominal voltage by amp-hours. 48V × 20Ah = 960 Wh. Never compare amp-hours between packs of different voltage.
Why does my range drop in winter?
Lithium-ion cells deliver less usable capacity when cold. Store the battery indoors and fit it to the bike just before you ride; the pack warms as it discharges.
Does a bigger motor use more energy?
Only if you use it. A 750W motor ridden gently draws similar power to a 500W motor ridden gently. The reason high-power bikes show worse watt-hours per mile in practice is that people ride them faster and lean on the throttle more.
Can I add a second battery for more range?
Sometimes. Kingbull lists a 17.5Ah external pack for Voyager 1.0 that works alongside the built-in battery. Most other spare packs in the catalog are swap-in replacements, not add-ons. Only use a pack the manufacturer lists as compatible with your exact model.
Is the advertised range ever accurate?
It is achievable under the conditions used to produce it: lowest assist, flat ground, moderate speed, a light rider and a new battery. It is not a planning number for hills, headwinds, cargo or throttle riding.
