Hub Motor vs Mid-Drive: How Much Torque You Actually Need for Hills and Cargo

By Volt Ranger editorial · Published · Updated

A hub motor drives the wheel directly and is geared to exactly one ratio — whatever your wheel size gives it. A mid-drive sits at the cranks and sends power through your chain and cassette, so shifting to a low gear multiplies its torque at the wheel. That is the whole difference, and it is why mid-drives climb steep grades better while hub motors are simpler, cheaper and easier to service. Worth knowing before you shop here: every complete e-bike and trike in this catalog is hub-driven — across 671 listing rows there is not a single mid-drive mention. If you need a mid-drive for sustained steep climbing, this is not the catalog for it.

Why gearing is the whole argument

Torque at the wheel is what climbs a hill. A mid-drive's output passes through the drivetrain, so a low gear multiplies it the same way it multiplies your legs — drop into a much lower ratio and the motor's torque at the rear wheel rises in proportion. A hub motor has no such lever. It produces whatever it produces, and on a steep grade it slows down, loses efficiency and heats up. The trade goes the other way too: because a mid-drive puts its power through the chain and cassette, those parts wear faster and a shift under full power is hard on them. A hub motor's drivetrain sees only your legs.

Practical consequence: on a steep grade a hub-drive bike wants you to pedal, in a low gear, at a decent cadence. Sitting on the throttle up a long climb is the fastest way to overheat a hub motor.

Watts and newton-metres are not the same claim

Watts describe power — roughly, how fast the motor can do work, and how fast the bike will go on the flat. Newton-metres describe torque — twisting force, which is what gets a loaded bike moving and up a grade. Wattage figures on e-bikes are notoriously slippery because sellers quote nominal ratings, peak ratings, or both. In this catalog the Rover 2.0 is listed at a "1300W peak" and the Verve at "750W Bafang motor (1400W peak)." Peak numbers are short-burst figures and cannot be sustained.

The catalog publishes exactly one torque figure: the Kingbull Verve, at 90Nm from its 750W Bafang motor. Every other listing omits torque entirely. When a spec sheet gives you watts but no newton-metres, you have not been told how it climbs.

Front hub, rear hub, and what changes

Rear hubWeight sits over the driven wheel, so traction is good on climbs and loose surfaces. Used on the Mooncool TK2, TK Pro, TK2 PRO and the Kingbull range. Rear punctures are more awkward to fix because the motor and cabling live in that wheel.
Front hubListed on the Mooncool FT1 fat-tire trike (500W front drive). Keeps the rear axle conventional and makes rear wheel service easy, and on a trike it avoids driving both rear wheels. The front wheel carries less weight, so it can slip on a steep or loose start.

How much motor you actually need

Flat city commuting, solo rider: a 500W-class hub motor is plenty. The FT1 and TK2 are specified at 500W and neither is asked to climb.

Rolling terrain or a heavier rider: 750W-class. This is where most of the catalog sits — the Hunter 2.0S, Discover 2.0 and ST 2.0, Literider 2.0, Verve, Jumper Go and the TK Pro and TK2 PRO trikes are all listed at 750W.

Cargo or a passenger: power matters less than gearing and brakes. The Voyager 2.0 cargo bike is listed at a 450 lb payload capacity; before loading that much, care more about the brake type and the gear range than the wattage. Kingbull lists a Shimano 7-speed on the Discover 2.0 and ST 2.0 and hydraulic brakes on the Discover, Hunter 2.0S and Rover 2.0.

Sustained steep climbing, off-road: this is the case where a mid-drive genuinely wins, and where the answer in this catalog is a full-suspension hub bike — the Rover 2.0, EX Titan or Jumper Go — ridden with real pedalling input rather than throttle.

Sensors change the feel more than watts do

A cadence sensor asks one question — are the pedals turning? — and then applies a fixed level of power. It feels like a switch, and it surges on a hill start. A torque sensor measures how hard you are pushing and scales assist to match, which feels like your own legs got stronger and uses noticeably less battery per mile because the motor backs off when you do. In this catalog the listings that name a torque sensor are the Mooncool TK Pro trike and the Kingbull Verve and Trekker; Kingbull also sells a torque sensor bottom bracket as a $49 replacement part. If two bikes have the same motor and one has a torque sensor, that is the more expensive part of the bike.

Heat, hills and hub-motor life

Hub motors fail from heat, and heat comes from asking the motor to produce high torque at low wheel speed — exactly what a long steep climb on throttle does. Three habits protect the motor: pedal on climbs so the motor is not carrying the whole load, use a lower gear and higher cadence rather than grinding, and stop for a minute if the motor housing gets uncomfortably hot to touch. On a descent, remember the bike is heavy: brake early, alternate front and rear if you have mechanical brakes, and do not drag a single brake continuously.

FAQ

Is 750W enough for hills?

For rolling terrain with a rider who pedals, yes. For sustained steep grades on throttle alone, wattage is not the limiting factor — gearing and heat are. Pedal in a low gear on long climbs regardless of motor size.

What does 90Nm mean in practice?

It is the twisting force the motor applies. Higher torque means stronger acceleration from a stop and better hill starts under load. The Kingbull Verve is the only listing in this catalog that publishes a torque figure, at 90Nm.

Are there any mid-drive bikes in this catalog?

No. Across all 671 listing rows in the Mooncool and Kingbull feeds, no product describes a mid-drive motor. Every complete bike and trike here is hub-driven.

Does a peak wattage number mean anything?

It describes a short burst, not continuous output. A '1300W peak' motor is not a 1300W motor. Compare nominal ratings, and compare torque figures where they are published.

Front or rear hub for a fat-tire bike?

Rear, in most cases, because the driven wheel carries the rider's weight and holds traction better on loose ground. The main exception is a trike, where front drive avoids driving both rear wheels — which is the layout Mooncool uses on the FT1.
